Its been in the dream stages for years. Its been in the talks and discussions lately by city leaders that we need a convention/conference center. It looks like one more hurdle has been accomplished, and the center may just become a reality in 2017. Read more…….Construction of a new convention/conference center at Tarpon Point took another leap forward toward reality when city counsel approved several amendments to the proposed development order. Planning and zoning gave the approval for rezoning portions of the existing land for both the conference center as well as its parking facility. The site is next to the existing Weston Resort hotel.
The convention/conference center will be a first for the city. It will offer a 35,000 square feet center at a cost of $10 million dollars. 33-35 new permanent full time jobs will be created. The center is expected to to generate over $23,000 in additional property tax revenues for the city. Aside from a $200,000 incentive payment by the city as seed money, the balance of the construction costs will be by the developers.
This is really good news for the city as a whole, since there is no other existing facility of that size. With our local population now at about 165,000, and an added winter snowbird influx pushing the numbers closer to 185,000 in population, it s time for this type of facility. One more reason to make Cape Coral a destination location.
